Description: | Middle Island lies in the middle of the Tamar River between Bell Bay and Middle Point on the West Tamar. Between 1903 and 1949 it was used as a quarantine station for cattle arriving from all over the world, its 20 acres being divided into eight paddocks. The only buildings were the caretaker's cottage and outbuildings for the shelter of livestock. Although the island is a tidal island that can be reached on foot at low tide from Middle Point, I plan to leave York Cove at George Town by kayak and paddle on the incoming tide to arrive at Middle Island just on high tide (3.29m at 11:59 at Bell Bay). On the way we might have a look at Deceitful Cove. The one-way distance is about 7km. Bring good footwear (light boots or joggers) with you so that we can explore the island on foot, including visiting the ruins of the buildings. On the return trip, again with the tide, we might visit Redbill Point in West Arm. Note that the viability of this paddle will be dependent on there being a suitable weather forecast and the trip might be changed to Sun 5 December if the forecast is more suitable on that day. Another combined LWC-NWWC trip. |
