Description: | The Leven Falls are located near the southern end of the Leven Canyon. We’ll travel along the Loongana Road to about 500m before the steel bridge over the river. At this point we’ll join the Penguin Cradle Trail as it heads north into the magnificent canyon before climbing steeply to the top of Griffiths Ridge on Loongana Range, where we’ll get the brilliant views back down into the canyon from the Patricia Jukes Scenic Lookout. Then it’s down the other side under some imposing cliffs under we reach the signposted turnoff to the falls. From here this will be new territory for me – we didn’t explore this side track when we walked the PCT at the start of last year. The official PCT walkers’ guide describes the route as being “a rough blazed track that heads south to the base of the lower set of Leven River Falls (this track is not maintained and is steep and slippery).” It sounds like a suitable exploratory challenge. Hopefully we’ll reach the falls by about lunchtime. Then we’ll return by the way we came. The whole trip is probably no more than 6km in total but it involves a steep climb and descent of about 360m which is repeated so that’s over 1400m of elevation change for the day. We might enjoy a dip in the river at the end! |
